Experience
John Lau served his articleship with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now known as KPMG) and while there qualified as a Certified Public Accountant. Subsequent to his qualification, he joined Arthur Young & Company (now known as Ernst & Young) as their audit manager in charge of the Kuching office in Sarawak.
During the period, he was with the two international firms of chartered accountants, he was engaged in all the essential aspects of the accountancy profession. He was in charge of the audits of public and private companies and was also involved in accountancy, taxation, secretarial and consultancy work.
Subsequent to his employment in Arthur Young & Company, John Lau joined Star Publications Berhad as finance manager and was promoted to the position of general manager of the finance and administration department before starting his own practice, JB Lau & Associates in 1985 and later on merged with Grant Thornton.
Besides his regular professional practice, John Lau has served at Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital, a not-for-profit single discipline hospital of providing cancer treatment care to the less fortunate cancer patients. He was appointed to the board in the year 2002 and served as its chairman for 5 years from 2013 to 2018 and retired in 2019.
In the year 2016, John Lau took on the role as chairman of the Fund Raising Committee for the restoration of the Church of the Assumption, Penang which was built in 1860. The project cost was RM2.5 million and the Fund Raising Committee was tasked to raise RM2.0 million. This target was easily achieved by the Fund Raising Committee under the leadership of John Lau. The Church was successfully restored and re-opened to the public on 1 January 2018 by the Chief Minister of Penang.
